History of Guernsey Airport

On May 5, 1939, the airport first welcomed passengers. However, scheduled airline travel began in October 1946. By 1948, BEA's Douglas DC-3s went from London to Southampton daily. Jersey Airlines, a BEA associate, began operating weekend services to Southampton in Rapide eight-seat biplane airliners in 1951.

In 1960, four grass runways were in use. An expansion was proposed in the early 2000s in conjunction with constructing the new terminal to accommodate larger aircraft on trans-European routes, such as the Boeing 737 Classic or Airbus A320 family.

Contractors for the States of Guernsey were able to resurface the existing runway, extend the runway end safety areas, and reconstruct sections of the concrete apron areas during four two-day closures in 2012, thanks to the Airport 2040 program. A new drainage system and resurfacing were completed on the taxiways that lead from the aprons to the runway.

The ground lighting at the airfield and the navigation aids have been updated. The airport is also home to Aurigny's main office. The airport was once home to the headquarters of British United Airways' Channel Islands subsidiary.
